Korean production and sales company Barunson E&A is teaming up with Indonesia’s MD Pictures to bring the upcoming horror film Sorop to international audiences.

The film, based on a viral Twitter thread by popular Indonesian creator SimpleMan, will debut at the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) during the Busan International Film Festival.

Directed by veteran Indonesian filmmaker Upi, Sorop tells the story of siblings Hanif and Isti, who return to their hometown after their uncle falls ill.

Following his death, strange and unsettling events begin to unfold, including the eerie reappearance of their uncle. Upi, known for her work on Sri Asih and My Stupid Boss, co-wrote the film with SimpleMan.

MD Pictures, which previously produced Indonesia’s highest-grossing film KKN Curse Of The Dancing Village, is hoping Sorop will follow in the footsteps of other successful Twitter-thread-based films, like Sewu Dino, which was the top-grossing Indonesian film of 2023.

Barunson E&A, the production company behind the Oscar-winning film Parasite, is handling the international sales of Sorop. The Seoul-based company has also been expanding its reach by investing in other Southeast Asian films, including Indonesian action film 13 Bombs and horror film Respati.

MD Pictures CEO Manoj Punjabi expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that Sorop’s mix of local folklore and supernatural elements will appeal to global audiences.

Barunson E&A’s head of international business, Sylvie Kim, added that they see great potential in Indonesian filmmakers and are looking forward to a long-term partnership with MD Pictures.
