
Sabrina Elba is set to take on a significant role in the new film ‘Nuur‘, directed by the acclaimed Lula Ali Ismaïl and produced by Scythia Films, the studio behind the Oscar-nominated ‘The Apprentice’. The film also stars Omar Abdi and Hamza Fouad in key roles.
The film is based on the book ‘The Youth of God’ by Hassan Ghedi Santur, who is also penning the screenplay. It tells the story of Nuur, a bright and academically talented 17-year-old boy living in Toronto with his mother and older brother.
Sabrina Elba will portray Haawo, Nuur’s mother. Once a flight attendant married to a successful architect in Mogadishu, Somalia, Haawo’s life has taken a drastic turn. She now works at a supermarket and grapples with the emotional scars of her failed marriage.
The plot takes a dramatic twist when Nuur mysteriously vanishes, prompting Haawo to embark on an emotional and challenging journey to find her son.
In an interview with Variety, Sabrina Elba shared her excitement about the project, saying, “I’m thrilled to be part of this film. Haawo’s character resonates deeply with me, and the story is truly special. Collaborating with director Lula Ali Ismaïl has been an incredible experience.”
The film is produced by Daniel Bekerman, Chris Yurkovich, and Neil Mathieson, with funding from Telefilm Canada. Casting for additional roles is currently in progress.
