De Niro reflects on being a dad to seven kids, saying he did his best despite a busy career
Robert De Niro, the well-known actor, recently talked about what it’s like to be a dad to his seven kids.
His oldest is 53 years old, and his youngest is just a baby. While speaking with CNN’s Chris Wallace on the show Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?, De Niro shared some funny and truthful thoughts about being a father.
When Wallace asked him how he would describe himself as a dad, the 81-year-old actor said, “I’m trying my best.” He even joked that when he dies, he might put the words “I tried my best” on his gravestone. With a laugh, he added that he might also include, “Please forgive me for everything that I’ve done.”
Wallace seemed surprised and asked, “Were you not a good father?”
De Niro replied, “No! I did my best. That’s all I can say.” He admitted that his acting job kept him busy, but he always made sure his kids knew he loved them. “I was busy, but I always loved my kids,” he said.
De Niro has been a father for a long time. His first child, Drena, is 53 years old, and he also has a son, Raphael, who is 47. Both of them are from his first marriage to Diahnne Abbott. He has twin boys, Julian and Aaron, who are 28, with actress Toukie Smith. His son Elliot, 26, and daughter Helen Grace, 12, are from his marriage to Grace Hightower. His youngest child, a baby girl named Gia, was born in April 2023 with his current girlfriend, Tiffany Chen.

Even though raising seven kids is not easy, De Niro has always stayed close to his children. When he turned 81 in August, his daughter Drena posted a sweet message for him on Instagram, saying, “Happy 81st Bday to my Dad and #1 ride or die.” She added, “Love you with all my heart.”
Earlier this year, De Niro made headlines when he welcomed his youngest daughter, Gia, at 79 years old. He didn’t tell the public right away, but later talked about her during an interview for his movie About My Father. Now, at 81, he’s enjoying being a dad once again to a little baby.
Even though Robert De Niro is known for being a great actor, his most important role seems to be being a dad. He joked that all parents can do is “try their best”—just like he has with his seven kids.
