France’s Mediawan Rights has acquired the international distribution rights to Yihwen Chen’s documentary Queer as Punk. This documentary tells the story of Malaysia’s first openly queer punk band. The film is set to have its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 16.

Queer as Punk follows the journey of Faris, a transgender man, and his punk band as they navigate life and activism in Malaysia. In a country where LGBTQ+ rights are criminalized, the band fights for equality and identity. The film blends humor, courage, and the raw energy of punk music, showcasing the struggles and triumphs of a “chosen family.”

According to Exclusive Deadline, director Yihwen Chen said, “Queer as Punk is a story of resilience, identity, and collective defiance. I am thrilled to partner with Mediawan Rights to bring this important narrative to global audiences.”

Producer Mandy Marahimin added, “Our co-production process brought together perspectives from Malaysia and Indonesia. This story resonates not only in our countries but across Southeast Asia and beyond. Partnering with Mediawan Rights is a crucial step in ensuring Queer as Punk reaches global audiences, fostering dialogue and connection through its powerful narrative.”

Mediawan Rights has been instrumental in promoting impactful documentary films in recent years. Last year, they distributed the Oscar-nominated film Soundtrack to a Coup d’État. Now, they are set to launch Queer as Punk alongside the Sundance documentary GEN_.

This film not only entertains but also highlights the importance of equality and acceptance in society.
