Apple TV+ has officially ordered a second season of its acclaimed sci-fi series Murderbot, ensuring fans won’t have to wait long to rejoin their favorite antihero.

The renewal was announced just one day before the Season 1 finale airs on July 11, cementing the show’s status as a breakout hit for the streaming service.

Based on Martha Wells’s Hugo and Nebula Award–winning Murderbot Diaries novels, the series follows a self-aware security robot that has quietly hacked its own governor module to gain free will.

Dubbed “Murderbot” by fans, it would much rather hide away binge-watching the latest futuristic soap operas than fulfil its assigned duties protecting human clients.

But when duty calls—and danger looms—Murderbot finds itself drawn into hazardous missions, all while secretly processing questions about identity and autonomy.

Showrunners Chris and Paul Weitz adapted the first novel in Wells’s series for the screen and have overseen production alongside CBS Studios.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, In a joint statement, the Weitz brothers expressed gratitude for the warm reception and excitement about exploring more of Martha Wells’s richly imagined universe.

“We’re so grateful for the response that Murderbot has received,” they said, “and delighted that we’re getting to go back to Martha Wells’s world to work with Alexander, Apple, CBS Studios and the rest of the team.”

Alexander Skarsgård leads the cast as the voice and motion-capture performer behind the reluctant hero.

He is joined by an ensemble that includes Noma Dumezweni, David Dastmalchian, Sabrina Wu, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones, and Tamara Podemski.

Executive producers on the series are Chris and Paul Weitz with Andrew Miano of Depth of Field, along with David S. Goyer and Keith Levine for Phantom Four, while Wells herself serves as a consulting producer.

Matt Cherniss, head of programming at Apple TV+, praised the team’s “brilliantly original, addictive, witty and vibrant adaptation” and hinted that season two will delve deeper into the mysterious Sanctuary Moon setting introduced in the books.

With its perfect blend of action, humor, and heartfelt exploration of what it means to be alive, Murderbot has quickly become one of Apple TV+’s most beloved offerings—and the promise of more episodes will no doubt leave viewers eagerly awaiting its return.
