Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, made a surprise visit to the opening of a new Godmothers bookstore in Summerland, California, on Saturday, September 7.

The bookstore is close to where she lives with her husband, Prince Harry, in Montecito. Meghan came to support local authors and even gave a short speech at the event.

For the event, Meghan, who is 43 years old, wore a stylish navy blue jumpsuit and had her hair tied back in a ponytail. She kept her look simple with diamond earrings. A picture shared by author Laura Lynne Jackson on social media showed Meghan speaking into a microphone at the bookstore.

The bookstore opening attracted several well-known people from the area. Oprah Winfrey, who is Meghan’s friend and neighbor, was also there, along with author Shaka Senghor, astrologer Jennifer Freed, and the store’s co-founders, Jennifer Rudolph Walsh and Victoria Jackson.

Although Prince Harry didn’t attend, a display at the bookstore featured books written by local authors, including Harry’s memoir, Spare, published in 2023. Meghan’s children’s book, The Bench, was also part of the display, along with other books by authors like Gwyneth Paltrow.

Jennifer Rudolph Walsh, one of the bookstore’s co-founders, said, “We celebrate our hometown authors like heroes because they are heroes to us.” The bookstore aims to bring the community together and highlight the work of local writers.

Meghan’s book, The Bench, which was inspired by the bond between fathers and sons, became a New York Times bestseller in 2021. She wrote it to show a softer and more emotional side of fatherhood.

Meghan and Harry have been living in Montecito since 2020, after stepping back from their royal duties. They shared more about their decision to move to California during a famous interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021. Since settling in, they’ve focused on building a peaceful life with their family.

Besides attending the bookstore event, Meghan is busy working on a new lifestyle brand called American Riviera Orchard. This brand, expected to launch later this year, will sell products like tableware, kitchen linens, jams, marmalades, and cookbooks. According to sources, the brand reflects Meghan’s love for family, cooking, and home décor.

Meghan’s appearance at the bookstore shows her commitment to supporting her community and promoting local authors. She continues to stay active with new projects and by taking part in events that matter to her.
