Maurene Comey, the federal prosecutor who led the government’s case against Sean “Diddy” Combs, is now taking legal action herself — this time against Donald Trump’s Department of Justice.

Comey, the daughter of former FBI director James B. Comey, filed a lawsuit claiming her dismissal after Diddy’s trial verdict was “unlawful and unconstitutional.” According to court documents, she believes her firing was politically motivated, citing Trump’s rocky history with her father, who openly criticized the president during his first term.

Her legal team did not hold back in the filing: “The politically motivated termination of Ms. Comey upends bedrock principles of our democracy and justice system. Assistant United States Attorneys like Ms. Comey must do their jobs without fearing or favoring any political party or perspective.”

Comey alleges she was given no legitimate reason for her removal. When she pressed Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton for answers, she claims he responded only: “All I can say is it came from Washington. I can’t tell you anything else.”

The timing of her firing is also raising eyebrows. Just weeks earlier, she secured a conviction against Diddy on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. The jury, however, cleared the hip-hop mogul of more serious charges including sex trafficking and racketeering. Diddy is scheduled to be sentenced on October 3.

Maurene Comey is no stranger to high-profile cases. She previously served as a lead prosecutor in Ghislaine Maxwell’s infamous sex trafficking trial, which ended in Maxwell’s 20-year prison sentence back in 2021.

Now, she finds herself in a courtroom battle of her own — one that touches politics, celebrity, and justice all at once. If successful, her case could shine a spotlight on how political rivalries may influence decisions inside the Department of Justice.
