A controlled explosion conducted on a film set in East London near The O2 arena got out of hand, resulting in a fire, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

The LFB reported on August 31 via X (formerly Twitter), “The fire in #Silvertown followed a controlled explosion at a film set which spread out of control.

Firefighters worked quickly to extinguish the fire, which is now under control. Crews will remain on scene for the remainder of the evening.”

The incident, as detailed by LFB, led to the destruction of a van, most of a car, and a lorry (truck). Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries.

The emergency call was received at 7:51 p.m. UTC, and the fire was contained by 9:02 p.m. Fire crews from Poplar, Millwall, Shadwell, and East Greenwich were deployed to the site, totaling 25 firefighters and four fire engines. The scene of the blaze was an open-air yard near Dock Road and Trinity Buoy Wharf.

Newham Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) also tweeted about the incident, stating, “We are aware of reports of explosions being heard in the vicinity of the #O2 in #Greenwich. This was part of a pre-planned filming event in the Canning Town #E16 area. There is no risk to the public.”

Social media footage captured during the incident shows a boat being deployed to help manage the fire, with other videos showing multiple explosions and thick smoke clouds. One video featured a burning truck marked with the words “BBC News World,” although BBC News has clarified that it had no involvement in the incident.

Details about which film set was affected by the fire remain unclear, but further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
