Singer Lizzo has spoken about the difficulties she has faced with social media while dealing with serious legal problems. In an interview on Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, Lizzo shared how losing followers and seeing negative comments online has made her feel upset and even sick at times.
“When I see things about me now, or even if I see a word that looks like my name, I get physically unwell,” Lizzo said. She explained that from August 2023 to January 2024, she took a break from the internet to protect her mental health. During that time, her team handled most of her social media posts. Lizzo described the break as “healthy” and encouraged others to try taking time away from social media too.
She also talked about losing 150,000 followers in just one day and how it made her reflect on fame. “People now will just believe anything bad about you,” she said. “But if you unfollowed me that quickly, were you even a fan?”
Lizzo also spoke about the legal problems she has been facing. In August 2023, three of her former backup dancers accused her of behaving inappropriately. They said she treated Black dancers unfairly and created a bad work environment. Lizzo said she was shocked by these accusations and felt “blindsided.”
Another complaint was made by a fashion designer, Asha Daniels, who worked with Lizzo during her tours. Daniels claimed she and others were mistreated. Lizzo has denied these accusations. Legal cases about these claims are still ongoing, and a court hearing is set for January 14, 2025.
Even with everything going on, Lizzo said she is thankful for the fans who continue to support her. “I’m doing this interview for my fans who care about me, who’ve stood beside me,” she said.
Lizzo hopes to focus on staying strong and doing what she loves, despite the challenges she is facing.
