Kieran Culkin, an actor best known for his role in Succession, recently shared a story about a prank he played when he was 17. In 2000, Culkin was performing in a stage play called The Moment When with actor Mark Ruffalo. During one show, Culkin secretly replaced a fake stage joint (used as a prop) with one containing real marijuana.

In an interview with The Guardian, Culkin admitted, “I was 17 and stupid. I thought this was a good prank. I’m stupid. Oh my God, I’m so sorry.”

Surprisingly, some of his fellow actors found the prank funny. Ruffalo, who hadn’t smoked marijuana in 10 years at the time, joked, “The second half’s going to be so much fun.” Another actor who had never tried marijuana before said, “Is this what being high is? This is lovely.” Phyllis Newman, a seasoned actress, commented, “I haven’t smoked pot since the 1960s. Thank you, darling.”

But not everyone was happy. The stage manager was furious and demanded the joint back. “Ruin your life on your own time,” she told Culkin. Looking back, Culkin says he regrets what he did. “I know better now,” he said. “I’m not going to try to get anyone high on stage. I’m 42 now.”

Mark Ruffalo had previously talked about the incident on The Graham Norton Show, though he didn’t say Culkin’s name. Ruffalo shared that he and the other actor smoked the real joint during an important performance with critics watching. Despite the chaos, Ruffalo joked that he got the best reviews of his career from that night.

Today, Kieran Culkin is busy promoting his new movie A Real Pain, directed by Jesse Eisenberg. Culkin has also been nominated for a Golden Globe award for his role in the film.

This story shows how even famous actors make silly mistakes when they are young, but they also learn and grow from those experiences.
