Katy Perry’s latest music video shoot for her upcoming single “Lifetimes” has landed her in hot water with the Spanish government.

The singer is under investigation for allegedly damaging ecologically sensitive sand dunes on the small island of S’Espalmador, located just south of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea. The incident has sparked a preliminary investigation by the Environment Department of the Balearic Islands, who claim that Perry’s production company, WeOwnTheCity, failed to obtain the necessary permits before filming in the protected area.

The controversy centers on a strip of dunes that are part of the Ses Salines Natural Park, a protected zone known for its critical role in supporting migratory birds and other ecological and marine habitats.

The park is part of the Pityusic Islands, a region with strict environmental protections to preserve its unique ecosystems. The allegations suggest that the presence of Perry’s production crew, which included cameras, sound equipment, and other gear, may have caused damage to these delicate environments.

The Balearic Islands government issued a statement on August 13, confirming that they are looking into the unauthorized shoot. The statement clarified that while the production company did not seek the required permissions, the case is not currently being pursued as a “crime against the environment” (delicte contra el medi ambient). However, the investigation is ongoing, and the extent of any potential damage remains unclear.

Katy Perry has not yet publicly addressed the situation, and her representatives have declined to comment. The video in question, directed by the well-known music video director Stillz, features Perry enjoying a vibrant tropical getaway.

The scenes that have drawn the most scrutiny show the pop star dancing and frolicking on the dunes, a picturesque backdrop that now faces the possibility of being permanently altered.

This incident adds to what has already been a tumultuous period for Perry as she prepares to release her sixth studio album, 143, on September 20, 2024.

The album’s rollout has faced multiple setbacks, including criticism over the music video for its lead single, “Woman’s World.” Some fans felt the video’s lighthearted tone clashed with the empowering message of the song, leading to mixed reviews.

Adding to the controversy, Perry’s ongoing professional relationship with producer Dr. Luke has also come under scrutiny. Dr. Luke, who produced “Lifetimes,” has been embroiled in a long-running legal battle with singer Kesha, who has accused him of sexual assault and abuse.

The association has led to public criticism from various figures, including actress Abigail Breslin, who recently spoke out against those who continue to work with Dr. Luke, calling it a perpetuation of harmful industry practices.

Beyond the environmental concerns and album drama, Perry is also in the midst of a major career transition. In February, she announced her departure from American Idol after five seasons as a judge. Earlier this month, it was revealed that Carrie Underwood would be taking her place on the judging panel, joining Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan.
