Jennifer Lawrence, the famous actress, has been speaking out against online critics while promoting her new documentary, Bread and Roses. The film, which streams on Apple TV+ starting November 22, shows the challenges faced by women in Afghanistan after the Taliban took control of the country in 2021.

The documentary, directed by Sahra Mani, focuses on three Afghan women trying to regain their freedom. Under Taliban rule, women in Afghanistan face strict rules. They are not allowed to work, go outside without a male escort, sing, listen to music, or even buy food at a restaurant.

In an interview with CBS Mornings, Lawrence explained why she decided to support the project. “The Taliban didn’t want people to see what was happening, so I wanted to help show the truth,” she said. Lawrence also admitted she couldn’t imagine living without simple freedoms, like taking a taxi or listening to music.

While promoting the film, Lawrence has received criticism online. Some people argue she is not qualified to talk about such serious topics because she dropped out of school when she was young. Lawrence, however, has defended herself, saying the documentary is not about politics but about saving lives.

“There are 20 million women whose lives are in danger,” she said. “People ask why someone without much education is talking about this. I tell them it’s not about politics—it’s about people’s lives.”

At the same time, she encourages others to push governments and the United Nations to do more to protect women’s rights. She also pointed out that she has been educated in filmmaking and storytelling, which helped her create this project.

Bread and Roses premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and was praised by critics. The film shows the personal stories of three women—Zahra, Taranom, and Sharifa—whose lives changed completely when the Taliban came to power.

Although her family and friends warned her about the risks of working on such a project, Lawrence decided it was too important to ignore. “It’s dangerous, but it’s worth it,” she said.

The documentary tells an important story and encourages viewers to take action to support Afghan women. You can watch Bread and Roses on Apple TV+ starting November 22.
