Florence Pugh, a famous actress known for her roles in movies like Oppenheimer and Don’t Worry Darling, recently spoke about how hard it can be for young women in Hollywood. In an interview with The Times, she explained the struggles women face in the movie industry and why it’s important to stand up for yourself.
“There are fine lines women have to stay within,” Pugh said. “Otherwise, they are called a diva, demanding, or problematic.”
She explained that women often have to follow strict, unspoken rules, and if they don’t, they risk being criticized. Pugh shared that this pressure isn’t just a problem in Hollywood but happens in other jobs too. “It is really exhausting for a young woman to just be in this industry, and actually other industries,” she said. “But I’ve always been encouraged to have a voice.”
Pugh also talked about some of the characters she has played, like in Lady Macbeth and The Wonder. She said these roles show the way women are often told how they should live their lives.
“It’s always been fashionable to tell a woman how she should live her life or that the decisions they are making are wrong or too loud,” Pugh said. “It’s about control, isn’t it? It’s still ultimately about suppressing one sex, and we’re dealing with it all the time.”
By choosing roles that show strong and independent women, Pugh is helping to challenge these outdated ideas.
Even though many people might stay quiet, Pugh said she refuses to do that. “Most intelligent people would just be quiet and go live their life,” she admitted. “But I’m a bit too gobby and argumentative, a bit too yappy.”
She explained that she feels the need to speak up, especially when she is being treated unfairly. “If people don’t want me to be this way, they’re going to be severely disappointed,” she added.
Pugh’s honesty about her experiences shows that standing up for what you believe in is important, even when it’s hard. She encourages others to speak their minds and fight against unfair treatment.
Through her bold acting choices and her strong voice, Florence Pugh is helping to create a world where women can be treated with respect and have the freedom to be themselves.
