Channel 4 has given the green light for the second season of the comedy show Big Mood, starring Bridgerton fame Nicola Coughlan in the lead role. The show follows the story of Maggie, a 30-year-old writer living with bipolar disorder. Maggie’s best friend is Eddie, played by It’s a Sin star Lydia West.
At the start of Season 2, Maggie and Eddie reunite after a year of no contact. Eddie suddenly returns for a wedding, but she isn’t alone. She brings along an annoyingly positive spiritual healer named Whitney. Maggie must figure out whether her unique, chaotic life can fit into Eddie’s new world, or she risks losing her forever.
The first season, written by Camilla Whitehill, became Channel 4’s most-watched new comedy launch since Derry Girls. The show received praise for its authentic portrayal of bipolar disorder. Whitehill has said, “There’s a misconception that using humor to explore a serious topic means you’re not taking it seriously, but that’s not the case.”
Nicola Coughlan told Deadline that Big Mood has been one of the most special projects of her life. She said, “I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has loved our crazy, funny, and emotional show.” Coughlan’s popularity has soared since her character Penelope Featherington found love with Colin in the third season of Netflix’s Bridgerton.
Charlie Perkins, Channel 4’s head of comedy, said, “People really connected with this zeitgeisty buddy comedy, thanks to the brilliant performances by Nicola and Lydia. With the heart and passion of everyone involved in Big Mood, we’re excited to see how Camilla captures everything viewers loved about the first season and takes it further in Season 2.”
Big Mood is produced by Fremantle-backed Dancing Ledge Productions, known for shows like The Responder and Domino Day. The first season is available in the U.S. and Canada on Tubi, though it’s unclear if the second season will also stream there. The show is written and created by Camilla Whitehill and directed by Rebecca Asher.
Season 2 will be executive produced by Lotte Beasley Mestriner, Laurence Bowen, and Chris Carey. The show will be broadcast globally.
