HBO officially brings back ‘Big Little Lies’ for a third season with Francesca Sloane on board and the original stars returning.
It’s official — the Monterey Five are coming back! HBO has confirmed that Big Little Lies will return for a third season, with Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-creator Francesca Sloane set to pen the first episode and join as an executive producer.
She’ll work alongside series creator David E. Kelley and leading stars Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, who are also back as both producers and cast members.
The news ends months of speculation. Fans first started buzzing last November when Kidman teased that a third season was “in the works,” though nothing was confirmed until now.
The announcement also comes as Sloane recently signed a two-year overall deal with HBO, making her one of the most in-demand creatives at the network.
Big Little Lies debuted in 2017 as a limited series based on Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel. The star-studded cast — which also included Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, Adam Scott, Laura Dern, and Alexander Skarsgård — made it an instant hit. The show dominated awards season, picking up multiple Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series, Best Actress for Kidman, and Best Supporting Actress for Dern.
Skarsgård also earned an Emmy for his chilling role as Perry Wright.
The unexpected success led HBO to renew the show for a second season in 2019, which brought even more drama and a powerful new cast member: Meryl Streep as Mary Louise Wright, Perry’s mother. While Season 2 wasn’t based on a published book, Moriarty developed original storylines specifically for the series.
Now, with Sloane steering the new season and the original cast expected to return, fans are eager to see what’s next for the women of Monterey. Adding to the excitement, Moriarty has a sequel novel scheduled for release in 2026, which could inspire even more future storytelling.
