Fans of the Avatar franchise have another reason to get excited. The third installment of the blockbuster series has officially been titled Avatar: Fire and Ash. This news was unveiled on August 9 at Disney’s D23 fan event in Anaheim, California. The film is set to hit theaters on December 19, 2025.

The announcement was made through a post on the Avatar Instagram page, urging fans to “Get ready to journey back to Pandora.” This title reveals hints that the upcoming movie might explore even deeper themes and perhaps introduce new elements into the world of Pandora.

The Avatar films have become a cultural phenomenon since the release of the first movie in 2009. Directed by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña, the series has captivated audiences worldwide with its groundbreaking visual effects and immersive storytelling. After a 13-year wait, fans were treated to the second installment, Avatar: The Way of Water, in 2022. The upcoming Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the story that audiences have been eager to follow.

Kate Winslet, who joined the cast in Avatar: The Way of Water as the character Ronal, will reprise her role in the third film. In a December 2023 interview with PEOPLE, Cameron revealed that Winslet took her role seriously, learning from a “husband-and-wife shaman practice” to perfect her performance. “When you see [Winslet] doing that purification ritual to try to revive Kitty in the film and some of the stuff that she’s going to do in movie three, that’s based on actual practice,” Cameron said.

Sam Worthington, who plays Jake Sully in the series, added to the excitement in a January interview, telling PEOPLE that the next Avatar film will be “bigger than you can imagine.”

Cameron, who turned 69 in 2023, has ambitious plans for the franchise. In a February interview, he shared that he has already mapped out seven Avatar movies. “We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” he said, acknowledging the challenges of continuing the series as he ages. “But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

Cameron also spoke about his inspiration for the Avatar universe, drawing comparisons to other long-standing franchises like Star Trek and Star Wars. “To have that kind of cultural impact over time, you’ve got to pour all your heart and energy into it,” he added.

As fans eagerly await the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, it’s clear that Cameron and his team are fully committed to expanding the universe of Pandora, promising even more epic adventures in the years to come. The December 2025 release date is now marked on the calendars of Avatar fans worldwide, as they prepare for another journey into the world that has captured their imaginations.
