Andrew Garfield recently shared a heartfelt conversation with Elmo, opening up about the loss of his mother, Lynn Garfield, and how he continues to cope with her passing.

The intimate moment took place in a video released on Friday, October 18, where the Amazing Spider-Man actor sat down on a stoop alongside the beloved Sesame Street character to talk about his feelings.

Garfield, 41, lost his mother in 2019 to pancreatic cancer, and the pain of her loss still resonates deeply with him. In the video, Elmo starts by checking in on Andrew, saying, “Elmo’s going around Sesame Street checking in on everybody, so Elmo wants to know how Andrew’s doing.”

Sitting beside the red-furred muppet, Garfield responded with genuine warmth, expressing how happy he was to see him. “You have no idea how happy I am to see you,” he said with a smile, before sharing that he was “doing okay.”

Garfield hesitated at first, unsure if Elmo really wanted to hear what he was feeling, but after being reassured, he opened up about his mother.

“I’m just thinking about my mum today,” the English actor confessed. “You know, she passed away not too long ago, and I just miss her. I miss her a lot.”

Elmo responded empathetically, “Elmo’s really sorry to hear that, Mr. Andrew,” which led Garfield to share a touching perspective on grief and loss. He reassured Elmo that it was okay to feel sad and to miss someone, explaining how his sadness also brings him closer to the memory of his mother.

“Sadness is kind of a gift,” Garfield said. “It’s kind of a lovely thing to feel in a way because it means you really loved somebody when you miss them.” He went on to describe how memories of his mother help him feel connected to her, even after her passing.

“When I miss my mom, I remember all of the cuddles I used to get from her, all the hugs I used to get from her. Just like that, and it makes me feel close to her when I miss her, in a strange way.”

In his vulnerable moment with Elmo, Garfield highlighted how grief and joy can coexist. “I’m happy to have all of the memories of my mum and the joy she brought me, and the joy she brought my brother and my dad and everyone she ever met,” he said. “So when I miss her, I remember it’s because she made me so happy. So I can celebrate her, and I can miss her at the same time.”

The conversation concluded on a sweet note, with Garfield revealing that Elmo held a special place in his mother’s heart: “Elmo was my mummy’s favorite!”

The emotional exchange struck a chord with fans, many of whom expressed their reactions on Social media. Fellow Sesame Street muppet Grover even chimed in, offering Garfield comfort with a tweet saying, “Let me know if you need a warm hug.”

One fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) wrote, “Grief is love with nowhere to go. Andrew’s perspective on his mom is so heartwarming and relatable.”

Garfield has been open in the past about how deeply his mother’s death affected him. In 2019, while filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye, he paused production to fly to England and be by her side in her final days.

Speaking to Variety after her passing, Garfield shared how his mother encouraged him to keep working, saying, “I would struggle with you not doing it on account of me.” After completing the film, Garfield took a break from acting, allowing himself time to grieve and process the loss.

Garfield’s latest film, We Live in Time, also touches on themes of love and loss. The romantic dramedy, released in select theaters on October 11, tells the story of Tobias (played by Garfield), a man who falls in love with Almut (played by Florence Pugh), a rising chef who is diagnosed with late-stage ovarian cancer.

The film explores their relationship over the years, jumping back and forth in time as the couple navigates falling in love, starting a family, and ultimately coming to terms with Almut’s illness.

Garfield’s emotional conversation with Elmo, along with his personal reflections on grief, has resonated with many who have experienced similar losses. His ability to find joy in remembering his mother, while still allowing himself to feel the sadness of her absence, offers a touching reminder that grief is a complex but essential part of love.
