Amazon MGM Studios has tapped filmmaker Michael Showalter—known for The Big Sick and The Idea of You—to direct an as-yet-untitled “Cyrano Pop” movie.

According to Deadline, Written by Andrea Seigel from a story she co-created with Showalter, the project reimagines Cyrano de Bergerac in the modern pop-music world, centering on a behind-the-scenes songwriter navigating fame and romance among chart-topping stars.

The film is a Semi-Formal Productions venture, with Showalter and Jordana Mollick partnered alongside Catherine Davis of Nine Lives Entertainment and John Davis of Davis Entertainment.

Emily Crook is overseeing development on behalf of Semi-Formal.

This marks another collaboration under Semi-Formal’s multi-year, first-look deal with Amazon MGM for narrative features.

Showalter arrives fresh off the success of The Idea of You—which starred Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine and became Amazon’s most successful rom-com debut—and hot on the heels of several projects in production or post-production at Amazon.

Later this year, he’ll direct Oh. What. Fun., a holiday comedy starring Michelle Pfeiffer scheduled to stream December 3.

In 2026, he’ll reunite with Hathaway on Verity, his next theatrical release via Amazon MGM.

On television, Showalter directed and produced Hulu’s The Dropout, earning six Emmy nominations—including Outstanding Directing—and a Best Actress win for Amanda Seyfried.

His TV résumé also includes Happy Face (Paramount+), The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh (Amazon MGM), I Love That For You (Showtime), Search Party (HBO Max), In the Dark (The CW), and The Shrink Next Door (Apple TV+).

Andrea Seigel, whose credits include The Silent Twins (Focus Features) and the 2014 film Laggies, brings her screenwriting talents to the new project; she’s represented by UTA and Curate.

Nine Lives Entertainment—founded by Catherine Davis—is simultaneously producing high-profile work, including Amazon MGM’s funk icon biopic George Clinton starring Eddie Murphy (directed by Bill Condon).

Meanwhile, Davis Entertainment has a slate of upcoming releases: Amazon MGM’s The Pickup (starring Murphy, Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer) opens August 6; Amazon’s Fake Wedding (Lili Reinhart); Netflix’s 72 Hours (Kevin Hart); Focus Features’ Song Sung Blue (Hugh Jackman, Kate Hudson) on Christmas Day; Netflix’s Eddie (Murphy documentary); Paramount’s Vertigo (Robert Downey Jr.); Universal’s Blood Runs Coal (Cillian Murphy); and Sony’s On Your Feet! (Emilio and Gloria Estefan musical adaptation).

Many of these titles underscore the breadth of collaboration between Amazon MGM, Nine Lives, and Davis Entertainment.
