Fans will have to wait to see who survived the Season 1 cliffhanger, as Prime Video pushes back production on the Emmy-nominated series.
The wait to find out who survived that explosive Season 1 finale of Mr. & Mrs. Smith just got a whole lot longer.
Prime Video has officially hit pause on Season 2 of its hit spy drama, leaving fans in suspense about the fate of John and Jane Smith.
According to Deadline, the delay comes down to casting complications. Back in December and February, Anora star Mark Eydelshteyn and Yellowjackets breakout Sophie Thatcher were announced as the new Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
That casting sparked buzz, as it suggested the series was leaning into more of an anthology approach—switching leads and storylines each season.
The series even secured a major boost in March, winning a $22.4 million tax credit from the California Film Commission to relocate filming from New York to Los Angeles. A wave of rumors followed, with big names like Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura, and Gael García Bernal all whispered as possible guest stars.
But here’s the catch—none of those deals actually closed. Production, which was eyeing a fall start, is now on indefinite hold.
Behind the scenes, co-creator and showrunner Francesca Sloane is keeping busy. She recently signed an overall deal with HBO and will be penning the opening episode of Big Little Lies Season 3. While her move won’t necessarily derail Mr. & Mrs. Smith, it does add more uncertainty about when (or if) cameras will roll again.
There’s also the matter of money. Productions that land California tax credits have 18 months to use them, or risk losing the incentive. For now, there’s still a window to make it happen—but if Amazon misses the deadline, the series could have to reapply for new funding.
Season 1, which starred Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as lonely strangers turned fake-married spies, premiered in February and quickly became a Top 5 new series debut for Prime Video in the U.S. It scored a whopping 16 Emmy nominations, including nods for Outstanding Drama Series and for both leads.
It ultimately won two awards, including a Guest Actress trophy for Michaela Coel.
The finale left viewers on the edge of their seats, with John and Jane locked in a brutal gunfight that ended on a cliffhanger. Whether or not we ever learn what happened remains unclear, as Prime Video and the creative team are staying tight-lipped about future plans.
For now, fans will just have to sit tight. With casting in limbo and production unlikely before 2026, the mystery of Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 is as suspenseful as the show itself.
