The Bronx rapper says Jay-Z personally called him to shut down rumors of a new album, leaving fans waiting since ‘4:44’.

Cash Cobain just got a reality check straight from Jay-Z himself.

The Bronx rapper revealed on Wednesday (Sept. 10) that Hov personally called him after he stirred up chatter about a possible new Jay-Z album during his appearance on Billboard Unfiltered Live earlier this month.

“When I was on the phone with Hov he said that he is absolutely not dropping an album,” Cobain posted on X (formerly Twitter), adding six laughing-crying emojis. “That messed me up tho.”

Fans were buzzing after Cobain previously hinted that Jay might be preparing to release new music. On the Sept. 3 livestream, he even crowned Jay-Z the “king of New York” before teasing: “I heard Jay-Z about to drop some s—t. That’s what I heard. That’s about to shake the world.”

Turns out, Jay-Z was listening. Known for being hyper-aware of what’s said about him in the culture, the Roc Nation mogul wasted no time in shutting the rumors down himself. For Cobain, it felt like one of those legendary “This is Hov” text message memes come to life — only this time, it was a real phone call.

While fans may be disappointed, it’s not hard to see why the speculation started. Jay hasn’t dropped a solo project since 4:44 in 2017, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and earned praise for its introspective look at his life and legacy.

With 2026 marking the 30th anniversary of his classic debut Reasonable Doubt, many believe Hov could be quietly planning a big return.

Adding fuel to the fire, the 55-year-old rap icon has been spotted at several stops on wife Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter tour this year, keeping his name fresh in headlines.

For now, though, Jay-Z fans will have to keep waiting. At least Cash Cobain can say he got the inside scoop — directly from the man himself.
