Glen Powell breaks silence on his split with Gigi Paris, reflects on Sydney Sweeney romance rumors, and reveals the career advice Tom Cruise gave him.
Glen Powell is opening up about how he’s handling the spotlight as both his career and personal life make headlines.
In a new GQ cover story, the Anyone but You star revealed that he has been leaning on advice from none other than Tom Cruise after his breakup with model Gigi Paris became tangled in tabloid rumors.
Powell and Paris split in April 2023 while he was promoting the rom-com alongside Sydney Sweeney. Their undeniable on-screen chemistry sparked viral speculation of a real-life romance, which both actors later admitted they purposely played into as part of the movie’s marketing strategy.
The move worked — the film became a sleeper hit, grossing $220 million worldwide.
But the publicity stunt came at a personal cost. Paris, who had dated Powell for over three years, spoke candidly on the Too Much podcast in June, saying she felt “fed to the dogs” as Powell and Sweeney leaned into the rumors. “I just wanted respect,” she explained. “Don’t make a fool out of someone you’ve been with for over three years.
At the end of the day, work came first, and I had to walk away.”
Powell has now responded for the first time, telling GQ that he holds “nothing but love and respect” for Paris but acknowledged that “everybody’s always going to have their own narrative.”
To navigate the noise, Powell has turned to Cruise, who gave him a simple but powerful piece of advice: “It’s your job to just turn the volume down… You have your hand on the ability to turn up that noise or turn it down.” Powell said learning to block out the chatter and trust his instincts has been “a real godsend.”
As for Sweeney, she was directly involved in the film’s promotion as a producer and confirmed the duo’s playful use of the romance rumors was intentional. “I wanted to make sure we were actively having a conversation with the audience,” she said. Powell added that their “effortless chemistry” made leaning into the gossip easy.
While the drama may have cost him a relationship, Powell seems to be taking Cruise’s advice to heart as he focuses on his rising Hollywood career.
