Bobby Lee Says He Was Cut From ‘And Just Like That…’ in ‘Woke’ Shake‑Up

Bobby Lee says he believes his character was one of the “woke elements” trimmed from And Just Like That when Season 3 rolled around.

Lee, who played Jackie Nee—Carrie Bradshaw’s friend and podcast co-host—appeared in the first two seasons of HBO Max’s Sex and the City revival. But when the new episodes dropped, Jackie was nowhere to be seen.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lee pointed out that several minority characters didn’t return for Season 3.

“Some of the woke elements of the show, they got rid of, and I think I was a part of that,” he said, referring to himself alongside Sara Ramirez, who played Che Díaz, Miranda Hobbes’s non‑binary love interest.

Deadline confirmed back in February 2024 that Ramirez wouldn’t be back, and shortly after, Columbia Law professor Nya Wallace (played by Karen Pittman) also exited.

When the series reboot premiered in 2021, its diverse cast and inclusive storylines were widely praised. But by the end of Season 2, Carrie’s podcast arc came to a natural conclusion: her media company sold the studio where she’d worked with Jackie, Che, and her producer-turned-flame, Franklyn (Ivan Hernandez). That change effectively wrote several characters out of the narrative—though Lee suspects the decision had more to do with shifting creative priorities than with story necessity.

Despite his disappointment at being cut, Lee looks back fondly on his time with the cast. “Sarah Jessica Parker is the nicest person I’ve ever met,” he shared. “She made me feel so at ease. I like everyone on there. It was fun. I never have bad blood with anybody. You know what I mean? I am nice. I show up on time.” He also admitted he was initially hesitant to join the show—he wasn’t sure it fit his personal brand—but he overcame that fear and gave it his all.

Today, Lee has moved on to his next project: promoting his debut graphic novel, Deadweight, at San Diego Comic-Con.

Meanwhile, fans can catch the latest episodes of And Just Like That… streaming every Thursday at 9 pm ET on HBO Max.
