Richard Simmons, the beloved fitness guru, was honored with a touching celebration of life on October 5, in his hometown of New Orleans.

The event, held at St. Louis Cathedral, was marked by a heartfelt eulogy delivered by his brother, Lenny Simmons, who shared intimate memories and reflections about Richard’s life, legacy, and his commitment to helping others.

Lenny’s tribute, titled “God’s Plan For Richard Simmons: A Tribute,” offered insight into the man behind the public persona. Richard, who passed away on July 13 at the age of 76, was remembered for his unwavering faith and passion for making a difference in people’s lives.

As Lenny spoke to those gathered in the cathedral, he shared how his brother’s life was driven by a deep desire to leave a positive mark on the world.

Lenny reflected on how Richard had always been on a quest to discover his true calling, which eventually led him to the world of fitness and health. He noted that while many saw Richard as a celebrity, his brother never viewed himself that way. Instead, he remained focused on uplifting others and improving their lives through his work.

According to Lenny, faith played a big role in Richard’s journey. “His faith led him to find what he was meant to do,” Lenny said during the eulogy, emphasizing how important spirituality was to Richard throughout his life.

Richard Simmons became a household name in the 1980s and 1990s, known for his energetic workout routines, colorful personality, and his ability to inspire people of all shapes and sizes to embrace fitness. Despite his fame, Richard stayed humble.

Just two days before his death, Richard gave his final interview to PEOPLE, where he reflected on his career and how he saw himself. When asked about being called a “legend” or an “icon,” he humbly responded, “I don’t hear it at all. I never thought of myself as a celebrity.” His words reflected his modest view of his accomplishments, even as he remained a beloved figure in the fitness community and beyond.

Richard passed away peacefully in Los Angeles the day after his 76th birthday. A small private funeral was held for him on July 19, and he was laid to rest at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary. Though his passing came as a shock to many of his longtime fans, his impact on the world of health and wellness remains undeniable.

During the celebration of life, Lenny Simmons highlighted not only Richard’s accomplishments but also the personal qualities that made him so special to those who knew him. “Richard was always about people,” Lenny said, noting how his brother made it his mission to help others feel better about themselves, both physically and emotionally.

Whether through his workout programs or his motivational speeches, Richard left a lasting impression on countless lives.

In closing his eulogy, Lenny said, “Richard fulfilled his purpose in life. He left behind a legacy of love, kindness, and hope.” Those gathered at the cathedral left with a renewed sense of how much Richard meant to the world, not just as a fitness icon but as someone who genuinely cared about others.

Richard Simmons may be gone, but the impact of his work, and the love he shared with others, will continue to be felt for years to come.
