Netflix officially greenlights a live-action “Assassin’s Creed” series with Roberto Patino and David Wiener leading the epic adaptation of the hit game franchise.

Netflix has officially given the green light to a live-action adaptation of Ubisoft’s best-selling “Assassin’s Creed” video game franchise, Variety has learned.
The series, which has been in development for nearly five years, will be led by veteran television writers Roberto Patino and David Wiener, who have both been tapped as creators, showrunners and executive producers. Their involvement marks a fresh creative chapter after multiple teams have tried to bring the sprawling game universe to the screen.
The show will dramatize the centuries-spanning conflict between two secretive factions: one determined to shape mankind’s future through manipulation and control, and the other dedicated to preserving free will.
According to the official logline, viewers can expect to follow a diverse array of characters as they navigate pivotal historical events, wielding the franchise’s signature blend of high-stakes intrigue, parkour-style action and philosophical questions about identity, destiny and human connection.
“Every day we work on this show, we come away excited and humbled by the possibilities that ‘Assassin’s Creed’ opens to us,” Patino and Wiener said in a joint statement. “Beneath the scope, the spectacle, the parkour and the thrills is a baseline for the most essential kind of human story — about people searching for purpose, struggling with questions of identity and destiny and faith.
More than anything, this is a show about the value of human connection, across cultures, across time.”
Joining Patino and Wiener as executive producers are Ubisoft Film & Television’s Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill, along with Netflix’s Matt O’Toole.
“When we first announced our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we set out with an ambitious goal to bring the rich, expansive world of ‘Assassin’s Creed’ to life in bold new ways,” said Peter Friedlander, Netflix’s vice president of scripted series. “Now, after years of dedicated collaboration, it’s inspiring to see just how far that vision has come.”
The “Assassin’s Creed” franchise debuted in 2007 and has since sold more than 230 million copies across 14 mainline titles, with the most recent installment, “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” arriving in 2025.
The series’ narrative device—using advanced technology to access the genetic memories of Assassins from various historical periods—has allowed the games to explore eras ranging from the Crusades to the Italian Renaissance. A feature-length film starring Michael Fassbender was released in 2016 but met with mixed reviews.
Patino’s previous television credits include HBO Max’s post-apocalyptic miniseries “DMZ” and Netflix’s limited series “Zero Day,” while Wiener most recently served as showrunner for Season 2 of Paramount+’s “Halo” and worked on Peacock’s adaptation of Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World.”
Their combined experience in adapting sprawling literary and gaming properties positions them well to tackle the complexity of “Assassin’s Creed.”
This live-action series represents the first such project under the Netflix-Ubisoft deal, following the duo’s collaborations on animated projects like “Rabbids Invasion” and “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix.”
With production now officially underway, fans of the game franchise and newcomers alike can look forward to an ambitious television event that aims to honor the source material while breaking new ground in storytelling.
