Costner debuts Horizon: Chapter 2 at Venice, shares emotional journey of the film series
Kevin Costner recently premiered Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 at the Venice Film Festival.
The film, directed by Costner, features a cast including Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, and Luke Wilson. It’s the follow-up to Chapter 1, which came out in May at Cannes but didn’t do as well at the box office.
Despite the setback, Costner is hopeful. He mentioned that some of his past movies didn’t have immediate success but gained appreciation over time. He was thankful for the decision to delay Chapter 2’s release, as it gave him the chance to show the film in Venice, which was part of his original plan.
Costner spoke about the challenges of making the third film in the series, describing it as emotionally tough. He’s already put nearly $100 million of his own money into the first three films, and more will be needed for the fourth.
The Horizon series tells the story of America’s westward expansion, focusing on the struggles and promises of that era. Costner stressed that while the films aren’t political, they’re meant to remind people of the hardships faced during that time. He also highlighted the important role of women in the story.
Costner reflected on a visit to Venice 35 years ago for Silverado, where he felt a deep connection with the audience. He hopes Horizon will have a similar impact worldwide, saying that while he makes American films, the themes and behaviors in them are universal.
