Billie Joe Armstrong and Green Day didn’t just celebrate America’s birthday this year—they put it on blast.

At their Fourth of July headlining set at Belgium’s Rock Werchter festival, Armstrong grabbed the mic and turned the usual fireworks into a straight-up political rally, leading the crowd in a resounding “Fuck Donald Trump” chant.

The band kicked off with “American Idiot,” but Armstrong immediately flipped the script, swapping out the recorded lyric “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda” for a pointed “I’m not a part of the MAGA agenda.”

From there, they slid into “Holiday,” one of their signature protest anthems.

During an extended instrumental break, Armstrong motioned the audience into a call-and-response, and thousands of fans roared along: “Fuck Donald Trump.”

But Green Day didn’t stop at political slogans. Mid-set, they surprised everyone by weaving in a powerful rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” delivering it with the same raw energy they bring to their punk rock classics.

That patriotic interlude gave way to “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” sending shivers through the crowd as the band blended personal emotion with public dissent.

Armstrong’s bold stance isn’t new. Over the past few years, he’s made it a habit to call out Trump—and anyone else he sees as abusing power—from the stage.

In June, he even told Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Trump administration to “fuck off” while standing in solidarity with Los Angeles-area immigrant communities fighting against raids.

And back in January, during a “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” performance, he swapped in “not a part of the MAGA agenda” to their set list.

On their South Africa tour stop in Johannesburg last year, he even took a shot at Elon Musk by singing “I’m not a part of the Elon agenda” in “American Idiot.”

Originally penned as a critique of the George W. Bush administration, “American Idiot” has evolved into a live bulletin board for Armstrong’s latest grievances.

And this Fourth of July, in front of a sea of Belgian fans, he made it crystal clear: whether it’s MAGA, ICE, or any other target, Green Day will keep blasting out their dissent in three-chord punk form.
