Zoë Kravitz is opening up about the decision to change the title of her first film as a director.
The movie, which originally bore the provocative title Pussy Island, is now officially called Blink Twice. Set to hit theaters on August 23, the thriller features a star-studded cast including Kravitz’s fiancé Channing Tatum, Naomi Ackie, Alia Shawkat, and Adria Arjona.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kravitz, 35, explained the reasoning behind the title change. “It was made very clear to me that ‘p—y’ is a word that we, our society, are not ready to embrace yet,” she said.
The actress-turned-director highlighted that there were several obstacles in retaining the original title. These included pushback from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) and resistance from movie theaters that were reluctant to display the word on tickets, posters, and billboards.
Kravitz also pointed out that the feedback she received from women was a significant factor in the decision. “Interestingly enough, after researching it, women were offended by the word, and women seeing the title were saying, ‘I don’t want to see that movie,’” she shared.
This reaction was contrary to Kravitz’s initial intention, which was to reclaim the word and challenge the discomfort surrounding its use.
However, Kravitz acknowledged that society might not be ready for such a reclamation. “But we’re not there yet,” she admitted. “And I think that’s something I have the responsibility as a filmmaker to listen to. I care about people seeing the film, and I care about how it makes people feel.”
The film itself, co-written by Kravitz, revolves around a billionaire, portrayed by Tatum, who invites a group of friends to a secluded private island.
Among the guests is a Los Angeles cocktail waitress played by Ackie. The story unfolds with mystery and intrigue, keeping the audience on edge.
Back in August 2022, Kravitz expressed a different stance regarding the title. In an interview with WSJ. Magazine, she indicated that she had no intention of changing it.
“The title came from that world. The title is the seed of the story,” she said at the time. Kravitz believed that the provocative title was reflective of a period when such language was commonly used by men and symbolized an illusion that society had moved beyond those times.
Despite her initial resolve, Kravitz’s decision to rename the film demonstrates her adaptability and responsiveness to audience perceptions.
