Variety has learned that Netflix has handed a swift Season 2 renewal to Tyler Perry’s buzzy drama Beauty in Black, just days after the second half of its debut season began streaming on March 6. The series, which premiered its first five episodes in October, will return with another split-season run for its sophomore outing, maintaining the two-part release strategy that has become a hallmark of Perry’s Netflix collaborations.
The renewal underscores the show’s rapid traction on the streamer, with Perry teasing heightened stakes for the upcoming season. “We left fans on the edge of their seats at the end of Season 1, and we’re thrilled to continue Kimmie’s journey as she steps into her power as the newest member of the Bellaire family,” Perry said in a statement to Variety. “Kimmie exemplifies the spirit of never underestimating the underdog. If you thought Season 1 was a wild ride, you’re not ready for Season 2.”
Beauty in Black initially centers on two women from starkly different worlds: Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams), a sex worker scrambling to rebuild her life after being ousted by her mother, and Mallory (Crystle Stewart), a polished entrepreneur steering a thriving beauty empire. Their paths collide in unexpected ways, unraveling a web of secrets tied to Mallory’s family business—a glamorous brand masking a brutal underground trafficking ring. The latter half of Season 1 sees Kimmie transform into a vengeful force, determined to dismantle the Bellaire dynasty and rescue her kidnapped sister.
The ensemble cast features All American’s Debbi Morgan, Dynasty alum Richard Lawson, and The Real Housewives of Atlanta personality Ts Madison, alongside Amber Reign Smith, Ricco Ross, and Steven G. Norfleet. Perry, a prolific multi-hyphenate, serves as writer, director, and producer on the series, with Angi Bones and Tony Strickland executive producing under his Tyler Perry Studios banner.
The renewal continues Perry’s prolific output at Netflix, where he inked a multi-year creative partnership in 2023. Known for his rapid production pace and loyal fanbase, Perry has become a key player in the streamer’s roster, with Beauty in Black joining his growing slate of Netflix originals like A Fall From Grace and A Madea Homecoming.
Season 2 is expected to delve deeper into the Bellaire family’s corruption while positioning Kimmie as an unlikely heir to their empire. No release date has been set, but production is expected to ramp up swiftly at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta.
Beauty in Black Seasons 1A and 1B are now streaming on Netflix.
